09Jan04 (Monthenor): The preceding is the mostly true tale of
my sister and I playing River City Ransom over break. She is a menace to
friend and foe alike. All I wanted was to waste a half hour playing the
greatest game ever made, but I soon found myself scrambling to save my
very life, dodging her indiscriminate bike-chain attacks. Greatest game ever made, says I? Indeed. Tecmo perfected in
1990 what most game companies are just now coming to grips with: the
action-adventure-RPG. Humor, stat-building, butt-kicking, exploration, and
a cheesy plot came together to form something truly magical. It's a mix
that is still being
sought today with inferior copies. |
